US cuts military aid to Ukraine. What next?

It seems that every day there’s worrying new developments in the Ukraine war. The latest, the Trump administration has cut all military aid to Ukraine. Thankfully current stockpiles are likely to last several months and Europe is stepping up funding efforts, Europe provides 60% of the aid to Ukraine at latest estimates. However the lack of support from the US (both in material and diplomacy) will have dire ramifications if not addressed. If the US forbids any support of Ukraine in addition to the cut in financial aid that could mean US made weapons could not be sold there, US products (such as Musk’s Starlink) and weapons could not be maintained or replaced.

It is fair to assume that this is a direct result of Zelensky’s visit to Washington where the reception was shall we say, tense. In a publicly televised conversation Trump and Vance but on quite the performance for the American public and antagonised Zelensky. After the very public disagreements the Trump administration has arguably used this diplomatic issue to justify cutting aid. It is likely that this is to further pressure Ukraine to agree to peace terms agreed between the US and Russia and particularly to agree to a rare earth minerals trade deal.

It is increasingly hard to predict the erratic actions taken by Trump and every day we await new developments. However if the US continues to undermine the Ukrainian war effort and lends it’s diplomatic support to Putin the international consequences for Ukraine and the world could be dire.
